For
sale - Gearbox for BMC "Captain" engine
Piers and Sue Snell, owners
of 8-tonner "David G Hillyard", replaced the engine on their vessel soon
after they acquired it. The engine itself had irredeemably
reached the end
of its working life, but the previous owner happened to have had the
gearbox comprehensively overhauled only a year or so earlier. The
gearbox
having had something like £800-worth of work on it, Mick West (who
installed our new engine for us, and had done the overhaul) advised us
that
if there *happened* to be anyone out there with a BMC Captain engine
with
some life left in it, but a gearbox which was past its sell-by date, our
gearbox would be worth four or five hundred pounds to them, since it is
in
very good nick indeed. If there *is* any such party out there, we
are very
much open to offers... doesn't even have to be four hundred, as long as
it
is a serious offer, and as long as the gearbox goes to a good home on
board
a Hillyard!

Description - 9 ton
Cutter Rigged Hillyard Sloop with centre cockpit and five foot
bowsprit. Heavy
duty Tan mainsail with slab reefing, white inner stay sail on 2 to
1 block and
rotostay reefing tan outer jib. Brown double framed spray hood which
makes an
extra room.Typical
centre cockpit layout inside but with a folding full-sized chart table.
History - In present ownership for
22
years during which time nearly all working parts have been replaced or
renovated, She has been extensively sailed in the English Channel and
North
Brittany.The
addition of a bowsprit has transformed the sailing qualities of the
boat giving
it over an extra knot and reasonable pointing in light to moderate airs
and in
a decent blow we expect 7 to 8 knots with a beam to broad reach.
Rigging - Oversize 8mm
stainless steel
rigging except inner forestay and whiskers which are 6mm. Fixed
backstays to
support inner forestay, all about 5 to 7 years old except forestay in
roller
which is at least 15 years old.
Steering
- Below deck quadrant and all
new steering parts including oversize stock 1.25 inch diameter to Ocean
Racing
spec. fitted 17 years ago approx. Steering box also rebuilt at the same
time
with bronze bushes giving the steering a very light but responsive
positive
feel with just the right amount of weather helm. Both autohelm 3000s
work well
but the latest one will even sail the boat on a broad reach with the
Flasher [cruising chute] Flying
Engine
& Drive -
Mercedes OM636 was fully
rebuilt in 1989 and has never let us down, we have used it on average
less than
50hours a year since. At 1500 revs it used half a gallon of diesel an
hour and
gives us about 5.5 knots. At 2000 revs it gives us 6,6 knots approx. In
96 the
gearbox was replaced with a HURTH mechanical box which works well. In
2003 the
propeller and shaft were renewed.
Deck
- Fibreglass sheathed marine
plywood in reasonable order, the coach roofs were re-sheathed 20 years
ago.
Pushpit, pulpit and stanchions were replaced with new stainless steel
ones in
05 and fitted with 8mm SS wire to give it that solid Hillyard look.
35lbCQR
anchor and New Lofrans 1000w windlass. New chain plates 7 years ago
[external
to reduce risk of rust and thicker than original internal ones].
Interior
- New Jabsco loo with a nice
comfortable seat and new pipes. Gas bottle in box with exterior drain
and lid
for safety and insurance requirements. Most of the interior had a
repaint and
varnish this year. Waeco 60L fridge works well and has a small freezer
unit,
only a few years old. Two burner and grill gas stove. Full size
fold away chart chart table.
Electronics -JRC
radar, works well with a nice clear picture.

Chaletta - 9
Ton Cutter
Chaletta is a 9 ton cutter rigged sloop,
built in 1956 of mahogany on oak frames. She has been owned by
Lynn and Austin for 11 years. She has a mast, boom and fully
retractable bowsprit, all built by Noble Spars in 1998. Her jib
is set on a Wyckham Martin fuling gear, her Staysail on a Rotostay
reefing drum. Both of these sails are in tan, made by
Jeckells in 1998. Her mainsail is white, and has slab reefing.
The conventional centre cockpit has a sprayhood, and a zip-on cockpit
cover - useful for hanging wet clothes!
She has been sailed in the Irish Sea to
Isle of Mann and Ireland, and after sailing her to Dartmouth in 1999,
she has sailed the south coast of Devon and Cornwall, the Channel
Islands and France.
The standing rigging is in stainless
steel, and was all replaced (with the exception of the inner stay on
the reefing gear) in 1998 when the rig was replaced. The engine is a
BMC1500, rated at 35hp, and was completely restored in 1996. It
now starts and runs extremely well, and uses approximately 1/2 gallon
of fuel per hour. The propshaft, flexible coupling, fuel
tank, engine mounts, fuel lines and water seperator heads were
also replaced in 1996. In this rebuild, the engine installation
was modified to run two alternators, giving approximately 150 amp
hours, and charges 3 batteries via an Adverc smart charger. In
1999, the starter motor was replaced prior to the trip to Dartmouth,
and an unused starter is in a locker on board. The engine has
been modified to use spin-on type oil and fuel filters, an oil-cooler
is in place using raw water coolant.
The decks, top strakes and rubbing strakes were replaced
by Hillyards in approx 1994.
She has a Simpson Lawrence vertical electric windlass,
rated for a 50 foot yacht. The stem fitting was modified in 1998,
and now has storage for the 35lb CQR type anchor. She has a kedge
anchor, also CQR type, stowed in the aft cabin locker. The boat was
extensively re-wired in 199, and was fitted with new control panels for
both 12volt, and shore-power 220volt circuits. The toilet was
replaced in 2004. She has a Jabsco resh water pressurised hot and
cold water system, and is fitted with an engine calorifier, and
immersion heater. All brightwork (including the spars) were
coated in Coelan 3 years ago. The saloon has a small galley, with
gas oven, grill and two hobs. The usual two sette berths, with
trotter boxes, a drop-down chart table, and extensive new joinery,
including table, decorative bulheads, doors and lcker furniture crafted
in Brasilian Mahogany. She has a Blakes diesel heater, plumbed
into the main fuel tank. All berth foam and coverings were
replaced in 1999.
Instruments are Brookes and Gatehouse, with Tri-data
(speed, depth, water temperature and battery condition) and wind
instruments in the cockpit. The system also has a 'Data' repeater
at the navigation station, where the radr screen is (Raytheon, date of
manufacture unknown). The instruments are interfaced to the
radar, and the DSC radio. There is additionally a hand-held radio.
The boat has two Avon inflatables, and an electric
inflator. One ot the inflatables was purchased in 2001, and has
been used only 4 or 5 times. At that time, a new 3.5hp Tohatsu
outboard was also purchased.
